Research interest: Nature has proven to be an excellent, continuing source of medicines for the treatment of a wide spectrum of diseases. Natural products have played a key role in drug discovery and are still a prolific source of novel lead compounds or pharmacophores for medicinal chemistry. Unprecedented chemical structures, novel chemotypes, often pave the way to investigate new biology and to explore new pathways and targets. Most natural products leads are frequently optimized through structural modification to achieve the final candidate. My recent research interest is to combine the fields of the most advanced natural products chemistry and synthetic medicinal chemistry as well as cutting-edge life science technologies to design and discover herbal medicine-based bioactive natural products and their analogs as drug candidates, with emphasis on carbazole alkaloids, coumarins and cyclic peptides.
